Governing Board member Michael Hicks began his association with Tucson Unified at Keen Elementary, where he served as a crossing guard. He also attended Mansfeld Junior High, Tucson High, and Cholla High.
Because he dropped out of high school himself, Hicks says that graduation is best part of being on the Board. "It's more touching to me because I didn't graduate," he says.
Hicks continued his education, earning a degree. He currently works as an ITS manager for the City of Tucson, where he is responsible for the timing and communication of all the traffic signals in the city. He's also taught computer science at Pima Community College for twenty years.
Previously, Hicks worked for TUSD in the Facilities Department, as a "tire man."
"You have to love what you do," says Hicks. "I love the idea of being able to make changes for students, parents, employees, and the community."
